The Big Island

The Hosts on the Big Island have been organized geographically, going from Kailua-Kona (where most people fly in to; one can also fly to Hilo) going counter-clockwise towards Captain Cook, to Honauna, to Ocean View, to Na’alehu, through the Volcano National Park, towards Kea’au, down towards Pahoa (great Natural Health Food Store & “alternative scene”) back up towards Hilo, towards Honomu, up the Hamakua Coast towards Honoka’a, down into the Waimea Valley (new host there!), up to Hawi - neat little alternative town - possibility of organic farms there, but so far no WWOOF hosts, then back down the Kona Coast. Check out the fabulous beach at Hapuna State Park. If you arrive in Kailua-Kona, Patey’s Place Hostel (Tel 808 326 7018) is a good place to stay and they’ll pick you up at the airport too; in Hilo, I’d recommend, Arnott’s Lodge-it’s a hostel. (Tel: 808 969 70970 or email: info@arnottslodge.com)

The information provided here has, in the most part, been provided by the hosts themselves. WWOOF Hawaii takes no responsibility for the information provided. The WWOOF Hawaii coordinator has visited many of these places and has provided “editor’s comments” on some of these. If you desire further info on some of these, email us. The choices range from “fabulous to very simple”.

Each host is different and has “something” to offer. Accommodation is often a problem in Hawaii. I think if you really “put out”, you will receive. Some hosts are difficult to contact but keep trying, some want more information about you, before they’ll accept you. WWOOFing in Hawaii is different in some ways, than WWOOFing in other countries. There are many great places on the Big Island - go for it!

We are happy to give rides to apprentices when possible. We are also helpful in setting up paid work for motivated & interested individuals.

We are yoga centered & ask workers to practice mindfulness while staying here & are willing to learn & grow. We are a small organic farm in Kona, Hi. Bus service available from Hilo only, otherwise a 60 mile hitch hike, travel light. My home is 30 miles away from active volcano. I have a small 1/4 acre farm with vegetables, trees, ducks, chickens and a bunch of obnoxious little dogs. Always many interesting projects going on: working in native Hawaiian forest cleaning invasive plants, getting mini-sites ready for growing mushrooms, basic work in Hawaiian ethno botanical gardens, collecting seeds, creating areas for rare, common, fruit trees, etc. This is a small space which needs one with a gentle hand. I like to take a day off to go to usually hard-to-get-to beaches and hikes. Hawaiian style, don’t expect a real rigid time-line. Gentle hand and keen eye required. Shower and some meals plus a few extras provided. Accommodations: small space for 1, no couples please. Hot shower and phone available (please bring phone card) You’ll be on your own sometimes, as I work part-time. Bring some of your own food too, please, as I will offer 1-2 meals on the days that we’ll work. Basically vegetarian, but a healthy whole food diet is the norm here. Please “book” in advance. Aloha.
