Maui - The Valley
Island
One flies into Maui to the Kahului Airport. My suggestion is to go to Paia first, - a beautiful small alternative town - (taxi is about $14 - find someone to share the cost; there is no real public transport) and there is a “Surfers Hostel” ($20) (Tel. 808 579 8615) ½ mile up the road, on Tanini Street, off the main highway. Also recommended is “Steve’s Place”, 19 Luna Place (around $30 - $40 for a private room) in Paia. This is the place to be to go windsurfing and surfing. From here you can plan your further travels. The WWOOF Hosts that are listed first here, are in the Hana area, near the end of an amazing curvy highway, with 54 bridges along its 60 mile route through lush rainforests, quite the ride !!
Just after Paia, the other WWOOF hosts are to be found in the Haiku area and nearby. Ask the host you contact if they can pick you up somewhere convenient because transportation is sometimes difficult. Many people “find” these farms through “word-of-mouth” so if you are keen, send off a good email to get yourself onto these places. Good WWOOFing! Maui is a beautiful island with much to offer!

On our farm we export fresh tropical flowers by way of Fed-Ex to private homes. We also export fresh herbs to restaurants on the mainland and locally. We would be happy with 15 hours of help per week in exchange for a place to stay and we will help you get a job with local farms so you can make money for food and enjoy your stay here in Hawaii! Most of the farm jobs that are available are on tropical flower farms. We would need you to be here on Thursdays and Sundays for the big harvest. Other jobs include weeding, gardening, cleaning up the land, building, computer jobs, and working at the farmers’ market. Accommodation: double tented area- one large tent with another tent on top of a platform with single or double bed. Because we are in the rainforest we make sure you are off the ground and dry. We have a shared kitchen and bath house. You would need to get your own food, but are welcome to pick any fruit or veggies from the garden. Each person has something special to offer to our farm. Honoring the land, and honoring our private life as a family and being an honest person is the most important thing we request. (Editor’s comments: they were away when I came to visit but have heard good things about this place.)

Small diversified organic farm in Haiku. We do not have tent space on the property where we are currently farming, however, we intend to make the jump to two other properties soon which do have tent space and water. Our intention is to build on one of the properties and to farm both concurrently, as they are within easy walking distance to each other. The location is North Shore Maui, on rolling, verdant hills with bluffs overlooking the Pacific within a half hour’s drive of town. We could provide cooking equipment and some produce from our Haiku place. Any work/trade agreements would have to be discussed specifically with prospective interns. (WWOOFers) Working on Melody Farm could involve activity at the three sites mentioned. We would start with a one to two week commitment which could develop into possibly a long term arrangement. We appreciate references. We are mainly vegetarian, however, we do raise chickens for eggs. Our main crop is dry land taro.
